“It’s all your fault.”

While in college at UC Davis I worked in our Rec Hall, which was the main gym on campus. What did I do? I was a janitor. But mostly, I slept in the visitors’ locker room.

I was also a lacrosse player. My freshman year I was walking across campus and a friend I had met during orientation suggested I check out the game.

Almost after I picked up a stick, I fell in love with the game and ended up playing and coaching for 18 years until I retired.

During my Junior year, while working in the Rec Hall (yes, still as a janitor), Reebok ran a test of their Reebok PUMPS to see if they helped reduce ankle injuries.

I, of course, got a job handing out the shoes, and I quickly ensured the entire lacrosse team had a pair.

A few games into the season we were playing at UC Berkeley, whose lacrosse field was an astroturf field that was built on the top of a parking structure.

When we got to the game, everyone pulled out their shoes to wear since you have to wear sneakers on turf. We all “pumped it up” and ran out to the field.

Did I mention it was raining? Not just raining, but pouring. It turns out that when it rained that turf field became like ice and everyone was slipping and sliding all over the place and Cal beat us badly.

I quickly went from the cool kid who got everyone shoes to the kid who got everyone shoes that made them slip and fall. Needless to say, I was not allowed shotgun on the drive home.

And I never wore Reeboks again.
